Registration Open for 2010 Diversity Summit
Plan now to be in Chicago for the fifth annual Diversity Summit on June 11.  The chief purpose of this exciting conference is to provide a forum for a robust exchange of information about the current challenges and innovations surrounding the issue of diversity in the legal employment arena.  Co-sponsored by NALP ALFDP, this event will bring together NALP and ALFDP members, law firm partners, in-house lawyers, law school deans, industry consultants, and other legal career professionals who have an interest in continuing to expand the diversity of the practice of law. 

 The 2010 Diversity Summit will:

 Focus on the diversity pipeline and highlight programs that have successful track records.

  • Identify proven ways to increase the recruitment, promotion, and retention of diverse lawyers.
  • Examine how the movement to competency-based systems for compensation and advancement is likely to affect law firms’ diversity initiatives.
  • Provide diversity professionals and others involved in law school and law firm diversity initiatives an opportunity to connect with one another and share best practices.
  • Provide continuing legal education credits.

Eleven of the country’s major corporations announced Thursday, March 4, 2010, that they will collectively spend $30 million to hire minority- and women-owned law firms as outside counsel.

2010 Diversity Scorecard

The American Lawyer recently published its 2010 Diversity Scorecard in the March edition of the American Lawyer Magazine.  The study indicates that large U.S. law firms became less diverse in 2009.  For the first time in the 9 year history of the Scorecard, the percentage of minority attorneys at all participating firms dipped, from 13.9 to 13.4 percent.
